One of the distillery’s oldest products, Vermouth Routin Original Rouge is among Philibert Routin’s most famous creations.

For more than 130 years , our liqueur distillers have been inspired by his original recipe, a blend of 24 plants and spices.
A signature Savoyard apéritif, Vermouth Routin Original Rouge owes its unique flavour to an proprietary aging process: precisely 50% of the finished product is aged in oak barrels to achieve the perfect balance.

Selected ingredients

Formulated in 1883 by Philibert Routin in Chambéry, Vermouth Routin Original Rouge, proudly bears its inventor’s name. A subtle blend of 24 plants and spices wedded with a blend of white French Sauvignon wine and local Jacquère wine. Its unique flavour is due to a distinctive maceration process.

Here are some of its plants and spices:

WORMWOOD

Wormwood is a perennial plant in the Sage family. It is a silvery grey aromatic with deeply lobed silky-haired leaves, which produces yellow tubular flower heads from July to October, depending on the locality. The flowers are of little interest; the plant is grown for its foliage and its pleasant smell.

The product must contain wormwood to be labelled “Vermouth”.

Wormwood imparts a slight bitterness to Vermouth Routin Original Rouge.

CLOVES

Clove trees are native to Indonesia. The cloves are actually flower buds, which turn brown during the drying phase. Used as an aromatic for flavouring culinary dishes, cloves are also known for their beneficial health properties.

Cloves impart a spicy base note to Vermouth Routin Original Rouge.

LAVENDER

Originating in the western Mediterranean basin, lavender was first used by the Romans to keep their linen fresh and perfume their bath water. In Provence, lavender was used in the Middle Ages to make perfumes and medicines, but its cultivation really developed from the 19th century onwards. It is now grown worldwide. Lavender is harvested just before the flower blooms, in late July and August.

Lavender brings fresh and floral notes to Vermouth Routin Original Rouge.

CORIANDER

Coriander is a herbaceous plant which originated in East and North Africa. Like parsley, which it resembles, coriander belongs to the Apiaceae family. Its amply documented health benefits are due mainly to its fruits (seeds) which contain up to 25% fatty oil. The leaves are used as a flavouring.

Coriander gives Vermouth Routin Original Rouge a fresh attack.

VANILLA

Vanilla comes from the eponymous vanilla plant. They are the only orchids grown for non-ornamental purposes.

Growing vanilla, and extracting its richly aromatic spice, takes much time and attention. This makes vanilla one of the world’s most expensive agricultural products by weight. It comes in the form of shiny black beans, commonly called pods.

Vanilla lends sweet and rounded notes to Vermouth Routin Original Rouge.

Serving suggestions

Vermouth Routin Original Rouge is traditionally served with ice and orange decoration (wheel or peel). It is also excellent in cocktails.

Distillery tip: Accompanied by chocolate and nuts (almonds, hazelnuts), Vermouth Routin Original Rouge makes a wonderful ending to meals.

Storage advice: Unopened bottles of Vermouth should be stored upright, like spirits. Once opened, keep chilled. Like any fortified wine, Vermouth is sensitive to oxygen, which impairs its aromatic bouquet and its flavour. The cold slows oxidation of its aromas.
